5 ways to Plan a Summer Vacation

Now that we are well into Spring and the weather has started to act accordingly, I find myself in a constant place of planning trips for the Summer. Because I work for myself and don’t have the usual “paid vacation”, I have to be a bit more strategic about my travels. Strategies aside, I still do find time to add a few stamps in my passport and make new memories with my husband.

Whether you are an entrepreneur, like me, or you have a 9 to 5, planning your Summer vacations can sometimes be a daunting task. Where to go, what to do, when to leave, what to spend. All of these questions use to give me major anxiety until I started implementing these 5 ways to plan your Summer vacation.

Start Early

The earlier you start the better. Even if you don’t have all of the money to book your trip months in advance, it’s best to at least start picking places that you like to go and thinking when you can potentially take those trips.

Robbie and I usually sit down at the end of the previous year and make a list of where we want to go and when we can go in the new year.

Set a Budget

We make a budget on a monthly bases and in the budget, if we have any leftover we can decided to move it into saving or into our vacation fund. This has helped us so much in months where we didn’t necessarily have a trip plan but we may want to do something small and take a break from the mundane.

Do your research

If you have kids, does the place you’re  have kid friendly activities? What about transportation while you’re there? Questions like these can be easily answered when you do a bit of research. There are sites like Tripadvisor.com and tons of travel blogs that have lots of information about millions of destinations. I love checking them out before a trip to somewhere I’ve never been (or haven’t been in a while) to see what are the things I must experience and the others that I can pass on.

Plan your looks by shopping ahead

One thing that can mess up a trip is not having enough spending money because you bought tons of cute outfits right before your trip. When you plan your trip ahead , you should also plan outfits and buying certain pieces beforehand, especially big ticket items. The skirt in today’s look is one that I knew would be perfect for my birthday trip to Cuba in June. I would of course style it a bit differently but I know I have it and it’s ready for my salsa lessons in Havana this summer.

Use a professional

I know this makes some of my other tips null, but honestly if you don’t have the time or patience to plan your trip yourself , you should really look into a professional travel agent. You’ll have a perfectly curated trip without all  the hassle. Also, it’s not as expensive as you think. Travel agents get special rates for flights, hotels and excursions and in turn past those savings on to you. So you could essentially spend the same amount for a professionally curated trip as you would have on one you curated yourself.
