Policy DC

We went to Policy in DC, located just off the famous U st corridor, which is a DC hot spot specializing in American cuisine. I’ve always heard good thing about Policy, especially for brunch but have never had the chance to check it out until now.

So our waitress described the menu as a large tapas size portions. Now, it seems to me that every restaurant in DC does tapas now, so when I heard that I kind of rolled my eyes. Not because I don’t like tapas, it’s just that I was really hungry and wasn’t looking forward to spending a bunch of money to be satiated. To my delight, the prices at Policy weren’t very bad and our waitress was correct in her description of the “large tapas” menu.

We started out by ordering 5 different plates, thinking that we may need to get a few more but we were certainly surprised to barely finish what we had ordered.

This duck leg dish was so good. We actually wanted the duck tacos but the restaurant had unfortunately (or fortunately) ran out of them so our waitress suggested we try the leg. We were sure glad she did because we absolutely loved it. The meat was nice and tender and the sweet sauce was a wonderful addition. Even the crunchy kale chips on top gave a great textual experience that really heightened the dish even further.

When I saw these crab cakes on the menu, I had to have them. I had been craving crab cakes for days prior to eating this and my expectations were high. Fortunately, I wasn’t disappointed. These we’re not the best crab cakes I’ve ever eaten but they certainly weren’t the worst and the accompanying trio of sauces definitely worked in their favor.

Robbie said that this was his favorite dish of the night and for good reason. These lamb curry sliders were a complex mix of middle eastern flavors. From the delicate coconut flavor to the bold spice of the curry, these sliders were small but truly pack an amazing punch.

I am a big fan of seared scallops and these were cooked to perfection. They were perfectly seared and as soft as butter. They cut very easily with a fork. They came with three sauces. I didn’t particularly like the mustard sauce (the one on the far left) but the other two paired very well.

The last dish was a creamy and slightly sweet gnocchi. It was a very rich dish and featured crispy sweet potato string on top. The potato strings were a nice attempt at trying to break up the texture of the dish. It was pretty good.

I throughly enjoyed all of the dishes that we ate that night. I would give Policy a solid 9/10 rating. Great food, great atmosphere and nice staff made for a winning combination at Policy. After we had finished eating all of that amazing food, we went upstair where we danced the night. Yes, Policy has great food and a awesome club.
